8 Jul 2014 It has been recently reported that retinal Müller cells act as light guides serving to transfer light across the retina, from the vitreo-retinal border

Müller glia, or Müller cells, are a type of retinal glial cells, first recognized and described by Heinrich Müller. They are found in the vertebrate retina, which serve as support cells for the neurons, as all glial cells do. They are the most common type of glial cell found in the retina. While their cell bodies are located in the inner nuclear layer of the retina, they span across the entire retina.

In 1969, Yamada 3 reported the light and electron microscopic anatomy of the fovea centralis in the eye of a 45-year-old woman. The inner half of the foveola was composed of an inverted cone-shaped zone of Müller cells (Müller cell cone). We are pleased to provide you with the picture named Muller Cell, Rod Cell Anatomy. They are retinal glial cells that wrap around the cells that form capillaries, endothelial cells and pericytes, and constitute the majority of the non-neuronal volume of the retina. The Henle fibre’s portion of parafoveal Müller cells have been measured by Drasdo et al, who reported a maximum length projected onto the ELM of 536–675 µm (nasal to the fovea) and 406–664 µm (temporal to the fovea) in six normal maculas of young adults.25 Previous studies reported shorter maximum lengths in monkey26 and in non-foveal sections of human eye.27 In the present work, R2 maximum length was shorter, as it reached a peak of 471 µm in myopic foveoschisis and 300 µm in These cells were localized in the pigmented ciliary margin and were able to clonally proliferate in vitro to form spherical colonies that differentiated into retinal-specific cell types, including rod photoreceptors, bipolar neurons, and Muller glia. Similar cells were later identified in other mammalian species, including pigs and humans, but proliferated to a lesser extent than fetal or ESC-derived retinal stem cells [66,67].
